Mary's Milk

Here are some photos of paintings that depict the Virgin Mary either sharing or squirting her milk on others. For more on this motif, please see the entry "Prado, Pt III" dated October 26, 2005 and the comments it inspired.

As always, thanks to Fenway Partners, Inc. for the camera, although I'm sure they didn't expect it to be used for this.

Artist and painting, from top to bottom:
Pedro Machuca "Virgin with the Souls of Purgatory" 1517
Alonso Cano "The Miraculous Lactation of St. Bernard" 1650
Juan De Vivar "Appearance of the Virgin," 1545
Rubens "El nacimiento de la Vía Láctea"

She should -- look at all the practice she's getting.

What I'm really impresed by is how these artists managed to slip in some T&A ( well, T anyway ) without pissing off the Spanish Inquision.

All I have to say is go here:

I can't tell if it's for real or a very sly parody but, sadly, I think it's for real.

Carol - I clicked on the Baby Jesus and He smiled! Looks like I'm going to heaven. Did you check out the merchandise? Great stuff. I'm going to be doing some Christmas shopping on that site.

Julie - I guess the artists didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition...

Groovy.

Here's an image from the Getty's collection of St. Bernard, one that I was going to use on a little piece on humilty I'm working on, even though I downsized it and there's barely enough detail to make out what's going on. I don't have the date--at work, sorry--but it's striking and modern, no?

"A little piece on humility." Well, that seems appropriate, I suppose, as opposed to a piece on humility that will be a real attention grabber.

I like the picture from the Getty. I can't tell: is she squirting milk, or is she just flashing?
