And to think there are people today who don't know what a Superba is...

From The Big Apple website:

"Superbas” was the nickname of the baseball team that would later be called the Brooklyn Dodgers (now the Los Angeles Dodgers).
“Superba” was the title of an 1890s entertainment spectacle brought forth by the Hanlon family. When Ned Hanlon (no relation) managed the Brooklyn club in 1899, his team was called “Hanlon’s Superbas.” Hanlon was let go as manager in 1905. The Brooklyn team would continue to be called the Superbas until 1910.

I'd like to pretend I knew, but in fact this is all new to me.

Wow! Neat. I have heard of Ned Hanlon and I knew he was involved with baseball. He didn't, by chance, go to the Baltimore Orioles, did he? The reason I ask is that there was a park in Baltimore called Hanlon Park and, for some reason, I always thought it was named for him.

I'll save you the bother of answering...I just googled him and, yes, he was in Baltimore, but BEFORE he went to Brooklyn. Interesting.

There is a book about the Hanlon Brothers and their entertainment spectacles. I am thinking of getting it, despite my recent resolution to not buy any more stuff until I get through the pile of stuff I've already accumulated.

John, I love you, but knowing you as I do I don't think that resolution will go any better than the book-a-week one
